Brand relationships

IHG

IHG runs from Six Senses and Regent at the top to Holiday Inn Express, avid, and Candlewood Suites. Selling an IHG hotel runs through the brand’s change-of-ownership process and, often, a PIP.

Roots

Holiday Inn, Memphis, 1952

Headquarters

Windsor, England

Became IHG

2003

A family road trip and a motel that let the kids stay free.

In 1951 Memphis businessman Kemmons Wilson took his family on a road trip to Washington, D.C., and paid extra for each of his five kids at almost every stop. On August 1, 1952, he opened the first Holiday Inn on Summer Avenue in Memphis: a standard room, a pool, a restaurant, and children under 12 free.

Holiday Inn began franchising in 1954, one of the first hotel brands to do it, and in 1983 it started the first hotel loyalty program. The other half of today’s company dates to 1946, when Pan Am founder Juan Trippe started the hotel company that became InterContinental. After decades under different owners, the hotels split from Six Continents in 2003 and became InterContinental Hotels Group.

Today IHG runs from Windsor, England, and ties its brands together with IHG One Rewards. Noted Collection, announced in 2026, is its 21st brand. For owners and buyers, the flag sets the prototype and the service model, and it sets what the brand will ask for when the hotel changes hands.

What guests and buyers already associate with IHG

Holiday Inn is the household name

Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express carry a lot of IHG’s recognition. Guests know what they are getting and lenders know the brand, which helps when a buyer is sizing up a reflag or a conversion.

Premium brands built for conversion

voco, Vignette Collection, and the new Noted Collection let a hotel keep more of its own character than a classic prototype allows. For an owner thinking about a reflag, they are worth a look before a full rebuild.

Suites for the long stay

Staybridge, Atwell, and Candlewood cover extended stay from upscale down to midscale. Long-stay hotels run with leaner staffing and a different revenue mix, and buyers underwrite them that way.

IHG’s brands, by segment

This is IHG’s brand house, read top to bottom in the collections IHG uses: luxury and lifestyle, premium, essentials, and suites, with exclusive partners alongside. Each card notes who the brand is built for and how the hotel runs.

A IHG flag is part of the deal. We know who to call.

Selling or buying a IHG-flagged hotel means a conversation with the brand: change of ownership, the franchise application, and often a PIP. The Kohler Team and Hospitality Sales Group help owners and buyers get through those steps, without sending you off to find a brand representative on your own.
